Your MSI GPU Is Holding Back — Here's How Power Limits Are Quietly Throttling Your FPS

Here's something that doesn't get nearly enough airtime in gaming hardware discussions: your graphics card ships with a built-in governor that's actively limiting how fast it runs. It's called the power limit — sometimes labeled TDP — and it exists for good reasons. But those reasons were designed around the average user, not the enthusiast who wants to squeeze every last frame out of their hardware.

If you've never touched this setting, there's a real chance you're running your MSI GPU at something like 80–90% of what it's actually capable of. Let's fix that.

What Is a GPU Power Limit, and Why Does It Exist?

Every graphics card ships with a thermal design power rating — TDP — which represents the maximum sustained power draw the card is designed to handle under typical load. For MSI's RTX 4070 Gaming X Trio, that's around 200W. For the RTX 4090 Suprim X, you're looking at 450W.

The power limit setting in MSI Afterburner (or within the GPU's own firmware) caps how much wattage the card can pull from your power supply during heavy workloads. When a game pushes the GPU hard, it wants to boost its clock speeds as high as possible — but those higher clocks demand more power. Once the card hits its power limit ceiling, it starts throttling clock speeds to stay within the budget.

This isn't a bug. It's by design. Manufacturers set conservative defaults to ensure stability across a wide range of systems, ambient temperatures, and power supply quality. A card that ships with a 200W limit might technically run fine at 220W — they just can't guarantee that for every unit, every system, and every user.

But you're not every user. You're reading a hardware deep-dive at 11pm, which puts you in a different category.

What Actually Happens When You Raise the Power Limit

We tested three MSI cards — the RTX 4070 Gaming X Trio, the RTX 4070 Ti Super Gaming X Slim, and the RTX 4080 16G Gaming X Trio — using MSI Afterburner to push power limits to their maximum allowed values (typically 110–120% of stock depending on the model).

The results were more meaningful than we expected.

RTX 4070 Gaming X Trio (stock: 200W / limit raised to ~220W) In Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p with DLSS Quality enabled, average FPS climbed from 87 to 94 — about an 8% gain. GPU clock speeds stopped bouncing between 2,400MHz and 2,550MHz and settled consistently around 2,580MHz. Thermals rose by about 4°C under sustained load, staying well within safe operating range.

RTX 4070 Ti Super Gaming X Slim (stock: 285W / limit raised to ~310W) This one showed the most dramatic gains. The Slim variant's compact cooler means it thermally throttles more aggressively at stock settings. Raising the power limit — combined with a modest fan curve adjustment — let the card sustain higher clocks without the thermal ceiling forcing it back down. Apex Legends at 1440p went from averaging 178 FPS to 196 FPS. That's not nothing.

RTX 4080 16G Gaming X Trio (stock: 320W / limit raised to ~355W) At this tier, the gains were smaller in percentage terms but still real. In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, 1% low FPS improved noticeably — from 52 to 61 — which matters a lot more for perceived smoothness than average FPS does. The card's beefy TRIFORCE cooler handled the extra load without breaking a sweat.

The Thermal Reality: Should You Be Worried?

Honestly? Less than you probably think — if your case airflow is halfway decent.

MSI's Gaming X and Suprim series cards are built with thermal headroom in mind. The TRIFORCE cooling system on the Gaming X Trio models especially is designed to handle sustained loads above stock power targets. Raising the power limit by 10–15% doesn't suddenly push your GPU into dangerous territory.

How to Actually Do This (Without Messing Anything Up)

The tool you want is MSI Afterburner — it's free, it's stable, and it's purpose-built for this. Here's the quick version:

  1. Download and install MSI Afterburner from the official MSI site.
  2. Open it and look for the Power Limit slider — it's usually expressed as a percentage of the stock TDP.
  3. Raise it incrementally. Start at +10%, run a benchmark or a 20-minute gaming session, and check temps.
  4. If stable and within thermal limits, push to +15% and repeat.
  5. Save your profile so settings persist across reboots.

You don't need to touch core clock offsets or memory overclocking to see gains from power limit tuning alone. This is arguably the lowest-risk performance adjustment you can make on a GPU — you're just giving the card permission to use power it was already capable of handling.

The Bottom Line

GPU manufacturers ship cards conservatively. That's not shady — it's practical. But if you've got an MSI Gaming X Trio or Suprim sitting in your rig, you're probably leaving somewhere between 5% and 12% of its performance potential untouched by default.

For a $500–$1,000 GPU investment, that's a meaningful chunk of performance you've already paid for. Might as well use it.
