Ask any PC gamer what refresh rate they're targeting and you'll get one of two answers: 144Hz because it's the "standard" upgrade from 60Hz, or 240Hz because more is always better, right? What you almost never hear is 165Hz — even though a pretty significant chunk of MSI's monitor lineup sits right there, and a strong argument can be made that it's the most practical refresh rate you can buy right now.

This isn't a hot take for the sake of it. There's actual reasoning behind why 165Hz deserves more credit than it gets, and it connects directly to how modern GPUs perform, how frame pacing actually works, and what competitive gaming looks like in the real world versus on a spec sheet.

How 165Hz Even Became a Thing

The 165Hz number didn't just appear out of nowhere. It showed up largely as a result of panel manufacturers — particularly those using IPS and Fast IPS technology — discovering that certain display hardware could be pushed slightly beyond the 144Hz ceiling without requiring a total redesign. Think of it as a natural overclock that came baked in from the factory.

MSI adopted this range across a solid portion of their gaming monitor lineup, including models like the Optix MAG series and several G27 variants. These panels were designed to hit 165Hz natively, meaning you're not dealing with a 144Hz panel being stretched beyond its spec. That distinction matters more than it sounds.

The GPU Angle: Where 165Hz Actually Makes Sense

Here's where things get interesting. The jump from 144Hz to 240Hz sounds massive on paper — and in terms of raw numbers, it is. But here's the thing: your GPU has to actually feed those frames.

For 240Hz to do anything meaningful, you need to be consistently hitting 240+ FPS in your game of choice. In titles like CS2 or Valorant, that's achievable on mid-to-high-end hardware. But in anything more demanding — your Cyberpunks, your Baldur's Gates, your Modern Warfare titles — you're going to be spending a lot of time watching a 240Hz monitor display 130 frames per second. Which is just a very expensive way to experience 130 FPS.

Now look at 165Hz. For a large number of gaming rigs running something like an RTX 4060 or RX 7600 — which represent a massive chunk of the actual gaming market, not the enthusiast bubble — hitting a consistent 165 FPS in competitive and mid-demand titles is genuinely achievable. You're actually using what you're paying for.

That alignment between GPU output and panel refresh rate is way more important than people give it credit for. A monitor running at or near its rated refresh rate consistently looks and feels smoother than one being fed half the frames it's technically capable of showing.

Frame Pacing: The Underrated Factor

Smooth gameplay isn't just about hitting a high average FPS number. Frame pacing — meaning how evenly spaced your frames are — plays a huge role in whether motion feels fluid or stuttery, even when the numbers look fine on paper.

When your GPU is comfortably feeding a 165Hz display, adaptive sync technologies like G-Sync Compatible and FreeSync (both supported across MSI's monitor range) have an easier job keeping frame delivery consistent. The headroom between what your GPU can push and what the monitor demands is less extreme, which tends to result in a more stable, predictable experience.

Push that same mid-tier GPU toward a 240Hz panel and you're either capping frames artificially — which introduces its own pacing quirks — or you're watching the adaptive sync range work overtime to compensate for a GPU that's struggling to keep up. Neither situation is ideal.

The Cost-to-Value Equation

Let's talk money for a second, because this is where 165Hz becomes genuinely hard to argue against.

The price gap between a quality 165Hz MSI monitor and a comparable 240Hz model is not small. You're often looking at a $100 to $150+ difference for what amounts to 75 additional frames of theoretical ceiling — frames that, again, your GPU may not even be producing in the first place.

For that same $100 to $150, you could be upgrading your GPU, adding more RAM, grabbing a better headset, or just pocketing the cash. The performance delta you'll actually feel in-game from 165Hz to 240Hz is far less pronounced than the jump from 60Hz to 144Hz, or even 144Hz to 165Hz in many real-world conditions.

If you're playing at the highest competitive level in esports titles where every millisecond counts and you can genuinely sustain 240+ FPS, the argument for 240Hz holds up. But for the vast majority of gamers? The diminishing returns kick in hard before you reach that ceiling.

Where 165Hz Shines Brightest

To be concrete about it, here are the gaming scenarios where a 165Hz MSI panel really earns its keep:

The Spec Sheet Isn't the Whole Story

There's a broader point here that applies to a lot of hardware discussions. Specs are a starting point, not the whole answer. A 240Hz number on a box sounds objectively better than 165Hz — and in a vacuum, it is. But hardware doesn't exist in a vacuum. It exists in the context of your GPU, your games, your budget, and what you're actually trying to get out of your setup.

MSI building out a strong lineup of 165Hz monitors wasn't a compromise. For a lot of builds, it was the right call. A panel that's well-matched to real-world GPU performance, priced accessibly, and capable of delivering a legitimately smooth competitive experience is a better purchase than a spec-sheet win that your system can't fully leverage.

Next time you're shopping for an MSI monitor and you see 165Hz, don't scroll past it looking for a bigger number. There's a solid chance it's exactly what your setup needs — and your wallet will thank you for taking a second look.
