X870 vs. X870E: Is the 'Extreme' Label Worth the Extra Cash — or Just a Marketing Flex?

Walk into any major US retailer's website and sort AMD motherboards by price, and you'll immediately notice a pattern. X870 boards cluster in one range, then there's a jump — sometimes a significant one — to the X870E options. MSI offers boards on both sides of that line, and the naming convention makes it sound like one is simply a better version of the other. But chipset tiers in the AMD ecosystem don't work quite that cleanly, and if you're trying to figure out where your upgrade dollar goes furthest, the story is a little more nuanced than "E equals better."

Let's break down what's actually different between these two chipset designations, where those differences matter for gaming, and where you're mostly just paying for bragging rights.

What AMD Actually Changed Between X870 and X870E

First, a bit of context. AMD didn't completely redesign the silicon between these two tiers. Both X870 and X870E are built on the same underlying chipset architecture and support the same AM5 processors. The distinction comes down to connectivity requirements that AMD mandates for each tier.

The X870E specification requires USB 4 support (at least one port running at 40 Gbps), PCIe 5.0 for both the primary GPU slot and the primary M.2 slot, and a higher overall lane count compared to standard X870. The base X870 still requires PCIe 5.0 on the primary M.2 slot, but GPU slot PCIe 5.0 support is optional — manufacturers can implement it, but they're not required to.

In practice, that means when you see an MSI MEG X870E GODLIKE or an MAG X870E TOMAHAWK WIFI, you know for certain that you're getting PCIe 5.0 on both the GPU slot and storage. With a standard X870 board, you need to read the spec sheet more carefully.

Does PCIe 5.0 on the GPU Slot Actually Matter Right Now?

Here's where things get real: for gaming in 2024 and into 2025, the answer is almost certainly no. Every current consumer GPU — including the latest AMD Radeon RX 9000 series and NVIDIA's RTX 50 series cards — runs comfortably within PCIe 4.0 bandwidth limits. PCIe 5.0 headroom on the GPU slot is future-proofing for hardware that doesn't exist yet in the consumer space.

If you're buying a board today and planning to use it with a graphics card you already own or plan to buy in the next year or two, the GPU slot PCIe generation is not going to change your frame rates. Not even a little.

PCIe 5.0 on the M.2 slot is a slightly different story since Gen 5 SSDs are actually available and do offer real-world improvements in sequential transfer speeds. But for gaming specifically — where you're loading assets and running the OS — the practical difference between a fast Gen 4 NVMe and a Gen 5 drive is smaller than the benchmarks suggest. Load times might trim a second here and there. In-game performance? Essentially identical.

Where X870E Actually Earns Its Keep

So if the PCIe 5.0 GPU argument is mostly theoretical right now, why does the E designation still matter? A few reasons that are more grounded in real-world use:

USB 4 at 40 Gbps is genuinely useful if you're connecting high-speed external storage, a Thunderbolt-compatible dock, or an eGPU setup. For a streamer or content creator who doubles their gaming rig as a workstation, that connectivity matters a lot more than it does for someone who just plays games.

VRM implementation tends to be more robust on E-tier boards. This isn't a hard rule baked into the spec, but MSI and other manufacturers consistently put their beefier power delivery hardware on the higher-end boards. If you're planning to run a high-core-count Ryzen chip — think the 9950X or future 3D V-Cache parts — under sustained all-core workloads, the VRM headroom on a premium X870E board gives you more thermal and electrical breathing room. For gaming alone, where workloads are shorter and less consistent, this matters less than it would for rendering or simulation tasks.

Connectivity lane count is higher on X870E, which means more PCIe lanes available for additional M.2 slots, USB controllers, and expansion cards. If you're building a system with three or four NVMe drives, multiple capture cards, or a complex peripheral setup, an X870E board gives you more room to grow without hitting bandwidth sharing limits.

MSI's Lineup and How to Read It

MSI structures its AM5 boards across several product families — MEG, MPG, MAG, and PRO — and both X870 and X870E chips appear across those families. A good rule of thumb: the MEG (Mega) line represents MSI's flagship builds with the most premium VRM setups and the highest feature density. The MPG (Mega Pro Gaming) line hits the performance-per-dollar sweet spot for most serious builders. The MAG (Mag) series targets value-conscious gamers who still want solid specs.

You can find X870E chips in both MEG and MPG boards, which means you don't necessarily have to buy the most expensive board in the lineup to get the E-tier feature set. The MSI MAG X870E TOMAHAWK WIFI, for example, delivers the mandated X870E connectivity requirements at a price point that's much more accessible than the flagship MEG options.

So Which One Should You Actually Buy?

If your build is primarily a gaming rig and you're not pushing it into workstation territory, a well-implemented X870 board from MSI's MPG or MAG lineup will do everything you need it to do. The PCIe 5.0 GPU slot isn't useful today, and the VRM difference between mid-range X870 and mid-range X870E boards is unlikely to affect gaming performance unless you're running a very high-TDP processor at sustained loads.

That said, if you're planning to keep this platform for four or five years — and AM5's long-term roadmap from AMD makes that a reasonable plan — spending an extra $50 to $80 on an X870E board starts to make more sense as a hedge against future hardware requirements. The USB 4 connectivity alone could save you from a board swap down the road if your peripheral setup evolves.

The bottom line: the "E" in X870E is not a scam, but it's also not magic. Match the board tier to your actual use case, pay attention to VRM specs and lane counts rather than just the chipset suffix, and don't let a letter upgrade talk you into spending $150 more than your build actually needs.

When in doubt, check MSI's spec pages side by side. The differences are right there in black and white — and they'll tell you a lot more than the marketing copy ever will.
